about

REAM IV (Part 2 duration: c.26')

These recordings were made between March 26th and August 6th 2020; thus they reflect, to some degree, my experience of this period of Covid-19 lockdown.

The pieces utilize methods of construction including collage, improvisation and structured musical composition. Disc 1 begins with a recording of the dawn chorus – a (non) ‘performance’ of Cage’s 4’33, the ‘ramped-up’ birdsong being a highlight of lockdown - made at some point in April; and other audio delicacies across the album include radio grabs and cutups sourced from the online ‘ocean of sound’. Musical elements range from ‘topical improvisation’ (Covid Prelude, a first-take recorded on March 26th) to raga-like improvisations in the Lydian mode; alongside interpretations of existing music by others (Atropos (ELP), Sirto Asizes (a trad. tune that I transcribed decades ago, but the source of which (Ethiopian?) is long gone)... Some of the keyboard music has been teased out of the online ‘Pianoscapes’ gigs (that took place from March to July), and these have been treated further in the studio environment...

The vocal music was recorded at Hinton on the Green, Worcestershire, during workshops that took place in July. The last track (‘And So’) takes a song by Billy Joel for a walk. The bonus track was recorded at 4am on a very special evening...

This album was finished up on August 5th; and then followed up by a fortnight in various Orkney islands, where more recordings were made... Now it’s October, and the world is different place. ‘Pianoscapes’ has just re-commenced as a real-life, 4-D musical event again; the music is moving on and world continues to turn. As with all albums, ‘Ream IV’ remains as a moment in time and space, a snapshot from these most unusual few months.
